Months of speculation about the Nissan LEAF receiving a 60kWh battery have finally been confirmed. The next-generation model is expected to come equipped with the brand-new battery, which will offer double the capacity of the current battery, improving the car’s overall driving range.
While speaking to AutoblogGreen, Kazuo Yajima, Nissan’s global director of EV and HEV engineering, confirmed Nissan would be replacing the current 24kWh battery with the new 60kWh battery in the next-generation LEAF, but he said he did not know when the new model would arrive on the market. However, with the 60kWh battery boasting more capacity, the driving range will increase significantly and likely offer 210-220 miles.
The current-generation 2016 Nissan LEAF offers a battery range of 107 miles with the 30 kWh battery, which is outfitted on SV and SL models. Due to this exceptional driving range, the LEAF is often touted by Nissan as “The World’s First Affordably Priced Electric Car.”
